Electromyography (EMG) Testing
Electromyography (EMG) is a specialized diagnostic test used to assess the electrical activity of muscles. EMS testing is always performed with the nerve conduction velocity (NCV) test.
How EMG Testing Works
- Electrode Placement: Small electrodes—typically in the form of fine needles similar to acupuncture needles—are gently inserted into specific muscles.
- Electrical Signal Detection: These electrodes measure electrical activity in the muscles both at rest and during movement.
- Real-Time Analysis: The recorded signals are displayed on a screen or translated into audio, allowing the physician to interpret muscle activity and detect any irregularities.
Why EMG Testing is Performed
- Diagnosing Nerve and Muscle Disorders: Determines whether symptoms are caused by nerve dysfunction, muscle issues, or problems at the connection between them.
- Locating Nerve Involvement: Identifies areas where nerve function may be impaired, such as in cases of carpal tunnel syndrome or pinched nerves.
